Child Family Care

Life After Diagnosis

The impact of a cancer diagnosis for a child lasts a lifetime and the time following diagnosis is emotionally traumatic for the entire family, with feelings of isolation, bewilderment and uncertainty about the next steps they should take. ChildFamilyCare is there from Day 1, assisting families to navigate their way through diagnosis and beyond.

Our mission is to empower every family living with childhood cancer through providing information, guidance and emotional support to meet individual needs. ChildFamilyCare provides and facilitates access to essential support programs and services that improve the quality of life for children living with cancer and their families from initial diagnosis, through intensive treatment, remission and beyond.

There are approximately sixty children and young adults diagnosed with cancer in South Australia every year. The good news is that childhood cancer survival rates have increased dramatically over the last thirty years, from 25% in the late 60s, approximately 75% today. Because of this, there is a great need for services to empower survivors throughout their lives and assist them in managing the long term impact of their diagnosis and treatments.

"Little Heroes Foundation has offered our family an enormous amount of emotional assistance throughout my daughter's illness. I would hate to think what it would be like if the Foundation was not there. It is not just for now, but for the kids of the future"

Rebecca, mum of 8-year-old Sarah who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in March 2009
